James Nicholas Endres, age 86, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Monday, April 9, 2018, at a care center in Watertown. A Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 12, 2018, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown. The celebrant will be Fr. Paul Rutten. Music will be provided by Helen Gullnick as organist along with the I. C. Funeral Choir. The family is requested to meet at the church on Thursday by 10:30 a.m. for a prayer service.
Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. Scripture Wake Service. Visitation will resume on Thursday prior to services at the church.
Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in Watertown. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion of Watertown and the Funeral Honors Team of the SD Army National Guard. Pallbearers will be: Nick Endres, Jr., Leon Maag, Mark Kienast, Rick Endres, Jim Czech, Kent Clausen and Dan Endres.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Immaculate Conception School, 309 2nd Ave. SE, Watertown, SD 57201.
Jim was born on July 14, 1931, in Watertown, SD, to Albert and Loretta (Haan) Endres. He grew up the eldest of 11 children on a farm east of Watertown, attended Immaculate Conception School and graduated from Watertown High School in 1950. After serving in the U.S. Army, he returned to Watertown and was married to Teresa (Schlenker) Endres and later divorced.
Jim married Maxine Hallauer. He enjoyed a life of farming, selling real estate and providing public service. Jim loved his Hereford cows going back to his 4-H years. He had winning cattle at the Denver Stock Show, Fort Worth, Louisville and many places in between! He was awarded the ‘Supreme Champion' at the 2011 Watertown Farm Show and in 2008, the show was dedicated to him as a life-long participant. Jim also belonged to the Yorkshire Association & Farmer's Union. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish and belonged to Knights of Columbus. Jim was a State Representative, Watertown School Board member and founded the SD Township Association. He started a career in real estate in 1985 and served as president of the Northeast SD Board of Realtors for two terms and as State Director. Jim thrived on hard-work and was a "mover and shaker" in everything he did.
Jim is survived by his wife of 33 years, Maxine Endres, of Watertown; nine children: Greg (Ann) Endres, Carol (Lyndon) Waters and Janet Endres all of Watertown, Don Endres (Angela) of Brookings, Judy (Jeff) Zeiger of Mankato, MN, Ruth (Derek) Parkhurst of Sioux Falls, Chuck Denly (Melissa) and Terry Endres all of Watertown and Dawn (Donnie) Hagstrom of Clark; 24 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters: Mary (Mac) McKibben of Veradale, WA, Tom (Barb) Endres, Patty (Lynford) Maag, Bob (Janet) Endres, Maxine (Marv) Czech, Nick Endres and Barb (Cecil) Kienast all of Watertown, Katie Carter (Ted) of Sioux Falls and William "Bill" (Pam) Endres of Watertown; his mother-in-law, Hazel Hallauer; seven brothers-in-law: Jerry Zuffa of Des Moines, IA, Frank (Marsha) Hallauer of Indianapolis, IN, Bob (Deb) Hallauer of Henry, Ron (Lori) Hallauer of Lincoln, NE, Terry Hallauer (Erica) of Florence, David (Lisa) Hallauer of Bradley and Doug Hallauer (Tiffany) of Wallace; three sisters-in-law: JoAnn (Rick) Winter of Lake Norden, Mary Ann Hallauer of Sioux Falls and Sheryl Hanlon (Brian) of Brookfield, MO; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons; father-in-law, Max Hallauer; sister, Ann Zuffa; brother-in-law, Dennis Hallauer; and sister-in-law, Karen Endres.
