Harriet Ruby Obituary

Harriet D. Ruby, age 98, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Thursday, August 2nd, 2018, at a care facility in Clear Lake, SD. She was the widow of Robert Ruby.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, August 7th, 2018, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Watertown, SD.

Reverend Luke Smith and Pastor Stephen Gregg will officiate. Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Monday, August 6th, 2018, from 4-7 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Burial will be at Augusta Cemetery in Marietta, MN.

Honorary Pallbearers will be her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.

Active Pallbearers will be Jesse Hurkes, Jim Ruby, Ethan Ruby, Jon Ruby, Jake Ruby, J.T. Purcell and Jayden Ward. Harriet was born on May 26, 1920, in Marietta, MN, to Harry and Florence (Strain) Spanton. She attended country school in Marrietta and finished schooling through the 10th grade. Harriet married Robert Ruby, on July 30th, 1939, in Marietta, MN.

The couple resided and raised their four children on the family farm near Marietta. They moved to Watertown in 1970 where Harriet began her 45 year career in babysitting.

She was known to many as Grandma Ruby.

She was known for her devil's food cake with brown sugar frosting, caramel rolls, bread, and occasionally a lemon pie.

She enjoyed yardwork and visiting with friends and family over coffee and cake.

Harriet retired in 2006.

She lived in her home until 2018 before moving into the Good Samaritan Society in Clear Lake, SD.

Harriet was the fastest walker in the nursing home.

She was hardworking, kind, and she affected many lives over the years. Harriet is survived by her children, Scott (Patti) Ruby, of Clear Lake, SD, Diane (Ray) Carter, of Watertown, SD, Violet (Ike) Hurkes, of Watertown, SD, Bill (Becky) Ruby, of Castlewood, SD; two sisters, Joyce Abner, of Canby, MN, and Doris Borman, of Redwood Falls, MN; 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; one brother, Alvin; and two sisters, Marvel and Brownie.
