Gary was born on January 21, 1940, in Watertown, SD, to Howard "Shorty" and Annette (Hansen) Scriver. He was raised in the South Shore area, graduating from South Shore High School in 1959. Gary worked at the South Shore Creamery until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1963. He served with the 1st Battalion, 68th Field Artillery Regiment, and was stationed in Frankfort, Germany. Gary was honorably discharged in 1965.
In 1966 Gary was united in marriage to Kathleen Fox. Gary graduated from DSU (formerly known as General Beadle State College) in 1969, with a secondary Teaching Degree, a double major in History and Social Science and a minor in Physical Education. Gary taught and coached basketball in Morgan, MN for 14 years. After Kathleen's passing in 1983, Gary moved back to his childhood home in South Shore, where he focused on raising his boys. During that time he engaged in crop spraying, construction, fuel and fertilizer transport, package delivery, and more than 10 years if being an inspector for a poultry processing plant.
On December 20, 1986, Gary and Gabrielle (Lamp) became committed to each other. Gary always lived his life fully in the moment and with gusto, by following his core values of family and friends. He was a born and committed teacher. He had a lifelong commitment of gathering knowledge and imparting it unto others. Gary spent more than 30 years trying to teach the proper use of grammar to Gabrielle, even though he did not succeed. He was persistent in imparting that information to her. Gary's mother told him that having Gabrielle in his life was the best thing that ever happened to him. Gabrielle never missed an opportunity to remind him of that.
Gary is survived by his wife, Gabrielle, of Goodwin, SD; two sons, John Scriver and Daniel Scriver, both of Robbinsdale, MN; three step-sons, Travis (Jessica) Gallop, Charles (Jennifer) Gallop and Jesse (Natallie) Gallop; two step-daughters, Nicolle McClintic and Michelle (Randall Fenner) McClintic; one daughter-in-law, Sarah (Kevin) DeBoer; 19 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Judy Southwick, Margaret Broich, Chris (Shirley) Scriver and Ross (Gail) Scriver.
