Elaine Halse Obituary

Elaine Lois Halse, age 81, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2019, at a local care center. She was the widow of Dennis Halse. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2019, at New Helgen Lutheran Church in Florence, SD.

Pastor Mindy Ehrke will officiate. Music will be provided by Sue Flisrand as organist with Elaine's granddaughters, Amber Lutz and Jessica VanSickle as vocalists. The family is requested to meet at the church on Saturday by 1:30 p.m. for a prayer service. Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Friday from 4-7 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at Dexter Cemetery in Florence, SD.

Pallbearers will be Elaine's grandchildren: Amber Lutz, Jason Lutz, Alissa Halse, Sydney Halse, Jessica VanSickle, Julie VanSickle, Jenna Jewell, Jill Weatherford and Justin Halse. Elaine was born on June 21, 1938, in Waubay, SD, to Melvin and Anna (Holm) Mikkelson. She attended country school north of Waubay, SD. On October 26, 1958, Elaine married Dennis Eugene Halse in Waubay, SD. The couple made their home on the family farm in rural Florence, SD.

Elaine enjoyed being on the farm, doing chores and being around the animals. During combining season, she enjoyed riding in the combine with Dennis until the truck or trailer got full.

In 2012, Elaine moved to Benet Place in Watertown, SD where she enjoyed reading, quilting and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Elaine is survived by her children: Patty Lutz of Webster, SD, Bruce (Angie) Halse of rural Hayti, SD, Lisa VanSickle of Watertown, SD, and Larry (Linda) Halse of rural Florence, SD; nine grandchildren: Amber Lutz (Jon Larsen) of Aberdeen, SD, Jason (Sarah) Lutz of Pierre, SD, Alissa Halse of Hayti, SD, Sydney Halse (fiancé Gavin Crume) of Clear Lake, SD, Jessica VanSickle (Ron Reiner) of Watertown, SD, Julie VanSickle (Jeremy Good) of Watertown, SD, Jenna (Adam) Jewell of Watertown, SD, Jill (Justin) Weatherford of Florence, SD, and Justin Halse (fiancé Madison Barthelman) of Sioux Falls, SD; six great-grandchildren: Dominic and Jayda VanSickle, Finnegan Halse, Adrienne and Amelia Jewell and Kolt Weatherford; sisters, Evelyn Zubke of Webster, SD, Ruth (Don) Doyen of Spearfish, SD, and sisters-in-law, Ramona Mikkelson of Webster, SD and Mildred Halse of Rock Rapids, IA. Elaine is preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Halse; parents, Anna and Melvin Mikkelson; two brothers, DeVerne and Donald Mikkelson; four sisters: Marvelyn Zubke, Bev Zubke, Arlene Zubke and Lorraine Bartelt; and one son-in-law, Loren Lutz. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Dexter Cemetery.
