Alice was born on July 18, 1937, on the family farm in rural Waverly, SD, to William F. and
Elizabeth (Schoenberger) Lenards. She graduated from Waverly High School in 1955. In 1959,
she graduated from General Beadle State Teacher College in Madison, SD, as a physical
education and biology teacher. She was a great basketball player in college and was even named
Best Woman Athlete her senior year.
On July 13, 1959, Alice married Philip Mack at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Waverly,
SD. Early on, she taught P.E. in Watertown, and later she was a substitute teacher and basketball
coach in Kranzburg. Alice served as the Youth Director for the Catholic Order of Foresters for
four years. In her forties, she started pitching softball - - and, despite being twice as old as many
of the other ladies in her league, was known as a formidable opponent. Alice was also a
homemaker, helping run the family farm while raising four sons and a daughter. She provided excellent care at home for her husband Phil during the last years of his life. When he passed in 2012, she continued living on the farm she loved, minding a sprawling garden and a happy herd of farm kitties.
Alice was a member of the Holy Rosary Church, the Altar Society, and the Catholic Order of
Foresters. She enjoyed reading, gardening, birdwatching, aquasize, playing cards, throwing
horseshoes, visiting with friends, and traveling in her van "Betty White." She competed and won
many gold medals in the Senior Olympics and completed the 6.2 mile Crazy Horse Volksmarch
three times in her late seventies. Alice took great pride in following her grandchildren's
activities, from football championships, track meets, and volleyball games to dance recitals and
choir concerts. She even made the big trip to Atlantic City to watch her granddaughter compete
for Miss America in 2017.
Alice is survived by her children: Robert Mack of Watertown, SD, Hugh (Cari) Mack of
Redfield, SD, Eric (Sandy) Mack of Velva, ND, Neal (Terri) Mack of Watertown, SD, and Anita
Mack of St. Paul, MN; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Steve
(Barbara) Lenards of Phoenix, AZ.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Philip, and her parents.
