Albert James "AJ" Mannie, age 68, of Watertown, SD, passed away Friday, April 19, 2019, at his residence.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Watertown Christian Church.
Pastor Gerald Volk will officiate.
The family is requested to meet at the church by 10:30 a.m. for a prayer service. Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Thursday, April 25, 2019, from 6-8 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Friday. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.
Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Funeral Honors Team of the U.S.Navy and the Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Watertown.
Pallbearers will be Shane Wirkus, Ryan Walsh, Chris West, Bryce Hagan, Chad Johnson and Cory Hanson. AJ was born on September 18, 1950, in Watertown, SD, to Lionel "Frenchie" and Maxine (Mitchell) Mannie.
He attended Watertown High School and upon attaining his GED, entered into the United States Navy in 1968.
In 1973, AJ married Patricia McCollum and to this union two children were born: Mason and Brandon.
Although Patricia and AJ divorced, they remained close friends. Later, AJ met and married Susan Henry on November 20, 1982, while stationed in Silverdale, WA, at Banger Subbase. Their daughter Sarah was born in 1983.
AJ and Susan spent 10 years in Silverdale, WA, Norfolk, VA and Jacksonville, FL. During his Navy career AJ's assignments were: USS L.Y. Spear (AS-36), Norfolk, VA, AUX. Floating Dock Medium 7, Norfolk, VA, Naval Recruiting District, Denver, CO, Trident Refit Facility, Bangor, WA, USS Glover (FF-1098), Norfolk, VA and Naval Air Station, Cecil Field, FL. Upon retirement, they moved to Watertown where he worked at ESCO for 10+ years.
AJ fought a long and courageous eight year battle with multiple myeloma. AJ liked reading and watching crime dramas and was an avid Denver Broncos fan.
He enjoyed camping, sharing stories around the fire with family and spending time with grandchildren.
AJ was a snack fiend and loved to eat peanut butter M&M's, cheeto puffs and drink coffee.
He was a complete history buff and his service and country meant the world to him. He will be remembered for his unique laugh among many other great qualities. AJ is survived by his wife: Susan, three children: Mason (Alison) Mannie of Fargo, ND, Brandon (Megan) Mannie of Lakeville, MN, and Sarah (Chad) Reckard of Trimont, MN; and four grandchildren: Jonah, Micaiah, Isaac and Grant. AJ was preceded in death by his parents, Lionel "Frenchie" and Maxine; one brother, Jack Mitchell; and Patricia Mannie.
