Delores was born on September 5, 1926, in Wilmot, SD, to Otto and Gladys (Fryer) Heuer. She was confirmed at Mazeppa Lutheran Church. As a young girl, Delores attended rural schools and graduated from Summit High School in 1945. On November 10, 1946, she married Deverne Hjellming. They farmed in the Florence and South Shore, SD, area for many years. In 1965, they moved to Watertown where Delores owned and operated the Hjellming Rest Home for 10 years. She developed an interest in ceramics and started Sioux Valley Ceramics, which she ran for 20 years. Delores sold ceramics at craft shows in South Dakota, Minnesota and North Dakota.

Delores was a long time member of Grace Lutheran Church, having joined in 1958. After retiring, Delores enjoyed crafts, especially crocheting, making many afghans for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and Children's Inn. Delores was a gracious hostess, a wonderful cook and enjoyed having family and friends in her home. In 2012, Delores moved to Sioux Falls due to health issues.
